How did the Holocaust end?

In 1945, the Allies defeated Nazi Germany. Millions of Jews and others had been murdered.  Survivors were liberated from concentration and death camps and sometimes given food and medical attention. Many survivors hoped to return to their hometowns and reunite with loved ones but were met with hostility. 

 

Jews lived in displaced persons (DP) camps, hoping for visas to travel to Palestine, the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries. Unfortunately, the quotas that kept Jews from emigrating from Europe before the war were still in place. Many Jews lived in DP camps until 1948 when Israel was founded and the United States accepted war refugees. 

 

While these survivors had been physically and mentally abused, many were able to adapt to a new life. Survivors lived with deep emotional scars.
